Journalism Student
San Francisco State University
Born and raised in Frankfurt, Germany, Laura Waxmann began learning English in the third grade and became infatuated with the language almost immediately. At 17 she won a writing contest sponsored by Oprah Winfrey and not only appeared on the show, but also received a scholarship that allowed her to fulfill a long-time dream to study in the United States.
In January 2007, Laura began her studies in the journalism program at San Francisco State University. While she appreciates all aspects of journalism, she has discovered that feature writing has struck a chord with her. In September of 2008, she began an internship with the CW Bay Area (CBS), where she produced content for the TV station’s website. In addition to running an entertainment blog, she conducted interviews with local and international artists/bands for the website’s music section. After completing this semester-long internship, she continued to freelance at the station for six months. In the fall of 2009, Laura joined San Francisco State’s campus newspaper, the Golden Gate [X]press, as a staff writer for the Arts and Entertainment beat. In 2010-2011, she interned at Mission Local, a hyper-local site that covers news concerning San Francisco’s Mission District. Laura graduated from SFSU in spring 2011.
